Meet Barum, our second male Beagle. This tri colored Beagle was born in the winter of '91 but we acquired him in the winter of 92. He is actually our son's dog but he is also part of our family. When our son named him, our first thought was, oh, my gosh, what a funny sounding name. Then we asked him why he had chosen it. He said, "Because when our first dog (Shadow), barked, he made the sound of ba-rum, ba-rum, ba-rum." So, to our son, this name has meaning. It was as if, the Beagle that had died had called him into being. And so very glad we are because one could not have asked for a more cheerful and obediant animal.

Never once has this delightful Beagle ever attempted to chew on any of our furniture. Never once has he ever strayed away from home. Never once has he done anything that I would consider disobediant or harmful. He is in fact, the perfect gentlemen.

Do you believe it. This is the very same Beagle when he was a older. His colors have really changed from the time of his birth, but his personality has not. He is still the warm friendly dog he has always been. Out of all the Beagles we have ever owned, he is by far the best Beagle. Why one could even say, that our Barum is the leader of the pack because all four Beagles will follow him wherever he goes. In a manner of speaking, he is also their teacher and mentor. Tell another one what to do, and if per chance they should not obey, all we have to do is to get Barum to do it, and they will all follow naturally.

Update - March 13, 2006 Barum is now 15 years old. He has now gone through 5 major surgeries. The last one performed this past week to remove an enlarged abdominal growth that was blocking off circulation to his hind leg. Barum suffers from non cancerous growths. Most are harmless fatty tumors, but several have gotten so large that they were blocking off vital bodily functions. For example: His first tumor had wraped itself around his spleen; so that both tumor and spleen had to be removed. Now, Barum normally has a huge appetite, he loving his food; but when he does not eat, we know something is terribly wrong. So lack of appetite is a sure tell tale sign of impending danger. But in this instance, he also lost control over his urinary functions. Plus there were visible signs of blood in the urine. So off to the vet he went. The vet called in a urinary specialist and they ran some x-rays and MRI scans among other blood tests. This scans and tests revealed the source and surgery was performed at Garden State Veterinarian Hospital, a sophisticated up to date, state of the arts hospital for animals and pets of all sorts. His latest surgery took place in another state. From what my son tells me, it is also a hotel like plush animal hospital but the prices are one third the cost. As of today's date (March 13, 2006), Barum is now home and recuperating nicely from his latest surgery.
