(Dog Allergies and the Adopted Pet with Special Needs)
Bravo was adopted through the Internet and acquired when he was four years old from a private source. His original owner had placed an advertisement because he was looking for a good home for his Beagle friend whom he could no longer care for due to his own illness. Bravo also needed special care because of his many allergies. So my son and his fiancee' agreed to take him in. He is indeed a welcomed addition to Beagle Land; pleasant, well mannered, affectionate.
As you can see from the two Beagle photos above, Bravo spends a great deal of his time indoors. If he is not resting, he will spend a great deal of his time pacing and panting; probably due to his many allergies. The signs of his allergies are visibly noticable. For example, redness, runny eyes, itching. We have also noticed (especially in the Summer months) that when Bravo is out of doors and actively running around his under belly seems to reden and he tends to pant a great deal more. It is not that his breathing is labored, but he looks taxed as if he is under strain. When his allergies are at their height, it becomes very difficult to approach Bravo, he getting annoyed by close bodily contact. We do suppose to help reduce the amount of heat his own body is throwing off. Yet being the smart Beagle that he is, he paces himself and comes inside all on his own; a neat feat for any dog who has access to his very own doggie door. He might also go off and find a cool spot for himself to help alleviate the stress his is under.
